East of Eden
Book Jacket
LOCATION: Muncie, Indiana
ROLE: Designer
OVERVIEW
The guidelines were to design a specialty/limited edition book jacket for one of our favorite books. Books are often distinguished and chosen base on their jacket design, making it important to incorporate symbolic themes or events that occur in the book into the design. After extensive research, I chose to design a book jacket design for the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
SOLUTION
The redesigned book jacket was a collaboration of fine art and design skills through the use of hand skills and technical design practice. The floral wreath with flowers and thorns symbolized the themes of good and evil coexisting throughout the novel. Choosing blue for the jacket was a reference to the consistent theme of nature that was present throughout the novel. To add a specialty element the book jacket included a hand burned wooden book box.
